Situated at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Gladstone is the "gateway" to many world class fishing locations, from the Capricorn Bunker group of reefs consisting of reefs such as Heron Island, Lady Elliot and Musgrave Islands as well as 30 or so other reefs and islands to the Swains reef system comprising some 160,000 square kilometres of reefs, the Swains is mainly accessed through a major charter boat fleet based in the Gladstone Marina.
Another world class fishery on Gladstone's door step is the water supply dam for the region - Lake Awoonga. Fast gaining a reputation as the premier freshwater barra fishery in the country, barra over 20kg and up to 30kg are common. Gladstone's Harbour, renowned for its shipping port is also a great estuary fishing system, Bream, Cod, Flathead, Salmon, Grunter, Whiting, Barra, Jacks, Queenfish, Mud and Sand Crabs and lots, lots more all abound in the Gladstone Harbour and adjoining estuaries.
