QLD Fishing Report

Brought to you by Compleat Angler Mackay:

For another week we have been blessed with great weather with the added bonus of plenty of whale sightings as the mothers and their calves have been seen resting in the bays before heading Southwards. The Spanish mackerel season continues to improve. The Spanish Shootout Comp. last weekend saw 33 fish weighed in with fish from 7kg through to 31.8kg being the biggest ever for the comp. Quality was high with most fish between 16 to 22kg. Certainly worth a look over the coming week at Knight Island, Wigton, Calder and Irvine. A drift over the rubble and reef shoals for grass and red emperor for those who enjoy their fine taste. Trout are still hanging in 20m around the inshore islands and reef channels, pilchard and squid still the favoured bait. Snapper reports continue with 3-6kilo fish being taken from the 4 and 6 mile patch, the front of St Bees Channel and Cullen Island. The afternoon/night tides next week are big so concentrate your effort in the creeks till the afternoon low tide. Target grunter and flathead over the sand flats and gutters, bait up with lobbies. Barra in the dams have shut down however sooty grunter are a great option while luring in Teemburra with 3” soft plastics.

Good Luck.
